Cisco.com’s Support mega-menu raises the bar—again

How Cisco.com’s mega-menu merges form with function to deliver a best practice experience

Cisco.com Support Mega-Menu 2011When Cisco.com launched its mega-menu last year it set the best practice bar—and it was high. The mega-menu provided greater access into a large (and sometimes unwieldy) site. Its design was easy to scan and use. And, it was also attractive—which is no small feat in a small space. In the siteIQ blog Cisco launches drop down mega menus & fat footers, we applauded the design and architecture of its Product and Services menu. This post welcomes the Support menu into the best practice fold. Read More→

Launches | The Age of the Home Page

By Kenna Dian · Comments (0)

Who is updating their home page, how are they doing it—and why it might not matter.

2011 is turning out to be the age of the home page. We’re seeing updates in record numbers– and some designs are actually breaking new ground. On the other hand, few of these designs are actually making it down to lower levels of the site—which is a big no-no in our book.

I’ll leave that point for a future rant. Meanwhile, let’s take a look at who’s producing these new home pages, the important design points and strategies they bring to the party—and explore the age-old question: why only the home page?

I’ll start with the “who” and “how” and leave my humble opinions for the end. Read More→

Don’t Miss/Don’t Bother | HP.com’s Home Page Launch

In this Don’t Miss/Don’t Bother we tackle HP.com’s new home page launch—and the waterfall effects on this mega site.

Kenna Dian | Don’t Bother

I have been watching the latest HP.com home page launch for the last three weeks with great interest—waiting to see how the new home page design would shake out. But after all this time, I am left wondering what on earth HP.com thinks it’s doing.

A short history. The cycle started about three weeks ago with a new home page, which suddenly disappeared the next day. Next, it appeared again in a rotation with the old home page. Within a week, there were 3 versions of the home page—then 4—and now we’re up to at least 5. Add two animated versions that show the visitor how to use the home page’s feature panels and navigation—and you have the whole picture.

I don’t know if HP.com will eventually settle on something—or will continue playing Russian roulette with its home page. But I do know that I’ve learned four things watching this…um…unique launch. Read More→

SAP.com’s home page re-design re-defines Website architecture

By Kenna Dian · Comments (2)

SAP.com Home Page 2011Think you know how to design the perfect home page? Engineer the most efficient Website architecture? Think again. Because SAP.com has changed all the rules of the game.

What would you think if someone told you they could eliminate the first 3 layers of your site? The blizzard of landing pages. Semi-redundant content. Pesky page load times. All of it.

Sounds impossible?  It’s not. Read More→

Black, blue and read all over

We’ve been updating the siteIQ client portals this week with an eye on mapping these sites to the new siteIQ.net Website and the Inside Track’s look and feel. My contribution to the madness was deploying a new gallery of siteIQ client home pages in our portal’s Welcome Center – which, in turn, led me to start seeing home page designs through a new lens.

Contrary to some conventional wisdoms, following in Microsoft.com’s footsteps doesn’t necessarily get you to the head of the class.

Needless to say, having the who’s who of IT industry home pages stacked across my screen provided a bird’s eye view of these sites that you don’t get via a browser. I’ve posted some interesting screen shot collages and insights in the siteIntelligence Research Center (siteIQ clients can log in here). Meanwhile, here’s some cut-to-the chase observations.

Most IT Websites play within one of three color schemes. The vast majority use a blue palette – and those that opt for another color (usually a corporate colors issue) liberally use blue in their graphics and photos.

The ‘hip and happinen’ color palette is black – favored by companies like IBM, HP, Adobe and Novell who want to send the message that they are on the technology cutting edge. However, a word to the wise is in order here. Executing these designs with panache is very tricky.

IBM, HP, Adobe and Novell are using a black palette to communicate their cutting edge credentials. These masterful designs are, however, best left to the experts.

Red (yes red) is the third palette — favored by a who’s who of developer portals Read More→

Sun.com plays catch-up by launching a new home page

By Nicole Wallens · Comments (0)

If you’ve visited Sun.com in the last week or so there’s no doubt that you noticed a brand new home page that is a dramatic departure from the previous iteration. From a visual perspective, the most striking changes are the full use of bold color that gives the page more weight & substance (which translates to sophistication in the minds of visitors), and a re-architected template that — although not radically different from the previous construct — delivers a wealth of links in a much more efficient manner.

Striking changes include the bold use of color and a more efficient design

Striking changes include the bold use of color, more balanced navigation, and a more efficient design

Beyond these immediately eye-catching alterations are an assortment of more subtle modifications that achieve a couple of objectives. First, navigational options are more evenly distributed, which balances home page content. Second, popular features, including downloads & free trials, are more prominently positioned making them particularly obvious & accessible to visitors.

Visual changes aside, the most significant modifications to the Sun.com home page lie in the reorganization of existing links — and addition of new links — that allow visitors to enter the site based on affiliation or objective. Admittedly, the previous home page provided access to resources via a smattering of audience-specific links and often encouraged visitors to Read More→
